If yes, then keep reading, as we are looking for a Senior Scientific Software Developer to join the SpaceM Bio Studio Project at the BioInnovation Institute (BII).

Incubated by the Novo Nordisk Foundation, BII’s mission is to create new life science solutions to address unmet societal or health needs. At BII, we have established a new program, Bio Studio, which aims to build life science start-ups based on world-class research. Bio Studio projects are three year grant funded projects, sourced from leading researchers employed at research institutions worldwide. The projects we admit combine scientific novelty, commercial viability, and the potential for significant societal and/or health impact. The goal of the projects is to create a viable start-up company based on the project within three years.

BII aims to recruit a strong project team for each Bio Studio project, and it is expected that this team will form the core of the future start-up deriving from the project. Apart from establishing a solid Project Team, BII provides a comprehensive network of industry, investors, and subject matter experts to support the projects.

The SpaceM project aims to develop and commercialize a recently invented technology for single-cell metabolomics for drug discovery and precision medicine.

The Principal Investigator (PI) for the project is Dr. Theodore Alexandrov, from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg), who is a world leader in single-cell metabolomics and was previously co-founder of a startup developing software in a related field. Dr. Alexandrov’s team at EMBL has developed the foundational technology that generates big data representing levels of drugs or metabolites inside single cells. This information can be of high value for both fundamental understanding of cellular responses and as a tool for drug development.
The SpaceM project will further develop and streamline the technology, algorithms and software to be applied to address key questions in drug discovery and precision medicine.

Your ownership of our mutual journey will be to:

  • Developing software implementing custom algorithms and visualization approaches for single-cell omics
  • Working together with experimentalists to formulate requirements and user stories
  • Working together with data scientists developing novel algorithms and further integrate them into software
  • Maintaining and improving IT infrastructure
  • Supporting internal users of the software

Your daily work and well-being will be shared directly with the Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR), but as a small community with close ties and bright minds, you should be prepared for many cross-functional and inspiring discussions that can help shape your work at BII.

Your Professional & Personal Spirit
Our ideal candidate has an MSc in software engineering, computer science, or a few years of relevant working experience within this area. Strong experience in Python is a prerequisite. It is also important that you have experience with both frontend and backend development as well as with developing graphical user interfaces.

In addition, you have:

  • Experience of working alone or in a small team in the role of a full stack developer
  • Knowledge of principles of data analysis
  • Experience in or knowledge of machine learning, image analysis is desirable
  • Experience in or knowledge of data analysis in either omics or single-cell field is a plus
  • Knowledge of napari is beneficial
  • Experience of working with experimental scientists to jointly formulate software requirements and user stories is a plus
  • Experience of working with data scientists to support algorithms developments and to jointly develop software based on a prototype implementation is a plus
